Title: Resolution of a problem by Varopoulos on Banach algebras using quantum information processing

Abstract:
In 1975 Varopoulos asked the question whether the commutative Banach algebra formed by the p-Schatten space (1 ? p??) on the Hilbert space l_2 endowed with the Schur product is a Q-algebra. We resolve this question in the positive using a surprising link between Banach space theory on the one hand and questions about entanglement and non-locality in quantum information processing on the other. This link enables one to cross fertilize results and ideas from two seemingly unrelated fields. This is joint work with Jop Briet, Troy Lee, and Thomas Vidick.
